Doberman pinscher is one of Dawkins noble men this incomparably fearless and vigilant breed stands proudly among the world's finest protection dogs.

 

Dobermans are actually a relatively new breed as far as common dog breeds are concerned. They were first developed in 1880s in Germany there are less than 150 years old and with their beautiful looks that remained a staple breed for well over a century Dobermans are the eighth fastest dogs in the world running at speeds of 32 miles per hour moreover their hearing is so strong they can hear sounds from 250 yards away.

 

History


 

Doberman pinscher is a medium-large breed of domestic dog that was originally developed around 1890 by Carl Frederick's Louie Doberman a tax collector from Germany he wanted a fierce guard dog to accompany him on his rounds Doberman also kept a local dog pound where he had access to many strays this breed is believed to have been created from several different breeds of dogs that are the characteristics

 

Carl Frederick's Louie Doberman was looking for some of the breeds thought to be involved include the Rottweiler ,German Pinscher ,Great Dane German Shepherd ,Manchester terrier an English greyhound, short-haired shepherd ,Boucheron and Weimaraner.

 


Doberman started to become popular when they were used in the Second World War as guard dogs.

  

According to the latest ranking by the American Kennel Club Dobermans are the 17th most popular dog breed in the U.S.

 

Appearance

With their sleek coat athletic build and regal appearance Doberman Pinschers look like aristocrats the code is shorter and lie close to the skin.

 

They may have a slight undercoat around the neck and they also have a long muzzle Dobermans have rust markings in the chest paws, legs, muzzle, above the eyes and underneath the tail.

 

They stand on their pads and are not usually heavy footed ideally they have an even and graceful gait.

Height and Weight

 


These dogs were originally intended to be guard dogs so males typically have a muscular and intimidating appearance than females Dobermans are compactly billed dogs where males stand between 26 to 28 inches at the shoulder and females between 24 to 26 similarly males weigh about 75 to hundred pounds whereas females 60 to 90 enjoying a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years.

 

Docking of Ears And Tail

 


Doberman pinscher has floppy ears and a long tail however many Doberman Pinschers you'll see have pointed ears and short tails this is because docking(Cropping of Tail and Ears) has become a common practice with this breed.

 

This is not done for an aesthetic purpose as the docking process was intended to improve their performance in their roles as protectors the long tail was actually considered a hindrance and cropping their ears made them more alert with the sound of uncoming potential threats however the docking process is considered cruel and unnecessary in many cultures and it is now banned in many countries across the globe.

 

 

Personality

 


Dobermans are known to be intelligent alert and tenaciously loyal companions who are driven strong and sometimes stubborn destructive and unmanageable if not raised properly with a consistent approach.

 

They will learn very quickly as Dobermans are the fifth smartest breed and can be easily trained.

 

Dobermans are known for outsmarting their trainers and getting easily bored they're also known as one man dog because they build strong bond with only one family member so their owners need to be intelligent firm and strongly positions as the leader of the group otherwise Doberman Pinscher will take control.

 

They're very sensitive to cold weather and they need adequate shelter in winter because they like to be in the house next to the fireplace or a heater.

 

Grooming

 


They're easy to groom although mostly a wash-and-wear breed some routine grooming will help to keep Dobermans in optimal condition a quick going over daily with a short bristled brush or a grooming net will keep his coat shiny and healthy.

 

Dobermans do not need to be bathed often their nails should be trimmed at least monthly and teeth brushed regularly in the ears should be wiped out carefully every few days.

 

Exercise

 


They need a rigorous physical and mental exercise.

Dobermans are that type of dog breed who need lot of exercise and Free Play long daily walks or hikes with the owner will suffice

 

Besides a large fenced area will be required to allow them to run as it can be vital for their physical and mental well-being.

 

Participation in canine sports such as obedience tracking and agility will provide exercise for the mind and body and fun times together for dog and owner.

 

 

Socialization & training

 


Socialization & training should be started in the puppy hood to help Dobermans to socialize with children and other pets.

 

They also need plenty of mental challenges to keep them away from becoming bored.

 

Health

 


Although Dobermans are generally healthy.

 

But there are certain conditions that breed as prone to one of such conditions is bloating a life-threatening digestive condition that owner should learn the signs of and know what to do should it occur.

 

These dogs are often more prone to skin disorders besides genetic health conditions that can affect the breed include hip dysplasia dilated cardiomyopathy a clotting disorder progressive retinal atrophy, albinism and hypothyroidism.

 


“Responsible breeders” should screen their breeding stock for these health conditions via medical testing some of the recommended health tests from the national breed Club are -:

 

  • Cardiac exam
  • Hip evaluation
  • Thyroid evaluation
  • Ophthalmologist evaluation

Dobermans in military

 


They are military dogs although initially bred and still used as worldwide guard dogs.

 

They are globally used as military dogs.

 

The woman pincers also have excelled at police and military canine duties have worked as therapy dogs for the disabled and search and rescue dogs and participated in competitive ducks parts.

 

During the Second World War the US Marine Corps Dobermans of the Pacific won the breed great fame 25 of these loyal devil dogs died during the battle.
