The Tibetan mastiff
The Tibetan mastiff dog breed was developed centuries ago and
Tibet originally used as guard dogs for livestock and property.
Tibetan mastiffs can still be found performing the role but
they also enjoy life as family companions and show dogs despite their massive
and intimidating size.
These dogs are big softies when it comes to their human
families however they're known to retain their guardian nature so strangers
must always be aware while coming in contact with the spree.
Number 1
Their history
The Tibetan mastiff is one of the oldest breeds considered
the progenitor of the other mastiff breeds in the world.
They're a guardian breed from Tibet who either traveled with
nomadic herdsmen watching over their flocks or served as the protector of
villages and monasteries travelers often wrote of the dog's ferocity which was
encouraged by the inhabitants.
Chinese documents dating back to 1121 BCE make a note of the
Tibetan guard dogs that may have been the ancestors of today's Tibetan
mastiff.
The dogs were called doki meaning Thai dog because
they were restrained during the day but allowed to roam at night.
Tibetan mastiffs were first brought to USA in the 1970s and
the American kennel club recognized the breed in 2006.
Number two
They have a protective personality
The Tibetan mastiffs loved their family with a fierce
intensity though they may not show it with public displays of affection they
want nothing more than to be with you and protect you these mastiffs have been guarding
people and property for more than 2000 years.
So it's safe to say that they're pretty good at it aloof
but watchful they'll take care not to let anyone inside your home unless permitted
they could still be reluctant though.
Number 3
They're independent thinkers
They're independent thinkers because of their heritage as a
guardian breed.
Tibetan mastiffs are independent thinkers with their own
agenda in their mind these dogs know what's for the best therefore they can be strong-willed
and stubborn when it comes to getting their way especially if it's for
their owner's safety the owners need to establish themselves as leaders but
without using force harsh words or physical punishment.
The Tibetan mastiff understands consistency and firmness but
won't take abuse.
Number 4
Their independent thinking can be troublesome
The Tibetan mastiff is an intelligent dog who learns quickly
but again they make their own decisions about whether they want to obey you or
not it's not their goal to please their owner but to protect them that's just
one of the reasons why they can never be walked off leash owners can never be
sure if their Tibetan mastiff will respond when they call for them.
They may also be aggressive toward other dogs especially
those of the same sex.
Number 5
They have mild activity levels the Tibetan mastiff is quiet
indoors but active outside they're moderately active and athletic dogs and a
securely fenced yard is necessary for them to get the exercise.
They need but don't think that they can't climb a chain-link
fence if they want to go exploring.
These mastiffs also like to dig and may one day come home with
a dirty coat on the plus side.
They're generally easier to house train.
Number six
They can get along really well with children
Tibetan mastiffs are often said to be good with children this
is certainly true if they're raised with kids from an early age.
Tibetan mastiff in this situation will love and protect them
with all that's heart but it's also important to teach children how to interact
with the dog and supervise them when they're together always make sure a
child's behavior is not making your dog uncomfortable or unhappy.
The same is true of other animals.
The Tibetan mastiff can get along really well with other
animals if they're raised together.
Number 7
They need early training even at eight weeks old.
Tibetan mastiffs are capable of soaking up everything they
learn they should be trained before they're just six months old if possible they
should be taken to puppy kindergarten class by the time they're 10 to 12 weeks old.
For formal training owners can begin training at home and
socializing the dog among family and friends until the puppy vaccines are completed.
Number eight
Their health issues
The Tibetan mastiff has some health conditions that can be a
concern
They include - :
Not all of these conditions are detectable in a growing
puppy but it can be hard to predict whether a dog will be free of these
maladies.
So owners must always find a reputable breeder who is
committed to breeding the healthiest pups possible the breeders should also be
able to produce independent certification that the parents of the dog have been
screened for these defects and deemed healthy for breeding for Tibetan mastiff
to achieve certification.
You need evaluations for hips thyroid and eye clearance.
Number 9
They make excellent watch dogs
The Tibetan mastiff was made only for one's sole purpose to
protect their loved ones so they would frantically try to defend their owner or
territory from invaders due to their massive size and fierce voice they could
protect their family without breaking a sweat in ancient times.
Tibetan mastiffs were used to protect people from tiger,
wolves and foxes.
Thanks to their reliability and practical protecting skills
Number 10
Their grooming
The Tibetan mastiff has a long thick double coat with males
having a more lavish covering than females the dense undercoat is soft and
woolly and the top coat is straight with a hard texture with regular brushing they
should not need frequent baits.
The Tibetan Mastiff would be brushed several times a week to
remove dead hair and the skin and coat should be kept healthy during shedding
season.
Owners should brush them daily to keep the loose hair under
control.
The rest as primary care trim the nails as needed every week
or two brush the teeth frequently with a vet approved pet toothpaste.
For good overall health and fresh breath.
