Chihuahua
The Chihuahua’s charms include their small size, big
personality and a variety of coat types and colors
They're all fully capable of competing in dark sports such
as agility and obedience and are among the top 10 watchdogs recommended by
experts
Although these are all pure bred dogs you may still find
them in shelters and rescues.
Number 1
History
The Chihuahua is a native of Mexico and there are many myths
surrounding the dogs ancestors they were believed to be spirit guides that
protected souls as they traveled through the underworld some dog experts say
that they were among America’s first native dogs and others believe that they
were brought to the new world after the Spanish conquest of Mexico.
The first Chihuahua were registered by the American kennel
club in 1904 was named and the Chihuahua club of America was formed in 1923.
Today the Chihuahua ranks 13th among the breeds registered
by the AKC (American Kennel Club)
Number 2
Physical Features
Chihuahuas are the smallest breed of dogs while some
designer dogs have been bred down to the one pound range the Chihuahua is the smallest
breed recognized by The AKC (American Kennel Club).
The biggest Chihuahuas are about nine inches tall and weigh
about seven pounds.
Chihuahuas are famous for having personalities that far
outstrip their little bodies.
When defending their owner Chihuahuas think nothing of
taking on a much larger dog what's impressive is how often those larger dogs
back down.
Number 3
Chihuahuas are the oldest breed in North America.
Chihuahuas are the oldest breed in North America while the
exact origins of the Chihuahua are unclear we know that they were bred in North
America the earliest records of the breed predated 1530 and were found in
pyramids of Cholula however it's most likely that the breed is even older but
their predecessors were a good bit bigger than the modern Chihuahuas.
Historians think that at some point the Chinese crested
terrier was introduced to the bloodline leading to the smaller dog we see today.
Number 4
Chihuahuas have big brains
When you look at the size of
their brains in proportion to their bodies you always dominate all other breeds
and that big brain resides inside a skull with a soft spot just like human
babies the soft spot or malara usually closes as the puppy grows but that does
not always happen.
A Chihuahua’s head already vulnerable because of its tiny
size is even more subject to injury if it has a lingering malara
Number 5
There's no consistency in their coats.
Most breeds of dogs share similar coats whether in color length
or texture but there's no standard to coat.
Their coats can be either long or short silky or wiry or of
just about any color in the dog world.
Even Chihuahua puppies from the same litter can
have very different code types their variation in color is also one of the
reasons for their popularity
Number 6
Chihuahuas were once thought to be sacred.
The Chihuahua’s ancestors the taka chi were an essential
part of Mayan culture however the Mayans were not the only ancient culture to
price Chihuahuas.
The Aztecs and Toltec did not precisely worship
them but these little dogs were an important part of their religious life
They believed yellow Chihuahuas escorted their owners to the
afterlife the dogs were often sacrificed before their owner died so they would
be there waiting.
Chihuahuas on the other hand were believed to take on their
owner's sins and were often sacrificed in their funeral pyres.
Number 7
Some people claim Chihuahuas can cure asthma.
There's no scientific proof for this many Chihuahua owners
insist the little dogs cure their respiratory ailments
It's easy to see where the idea came from because their
noses are so small Chihuahua was often gasped and snort to a Chihuahua owner who
started feeling better with no apparent explanation it must have seemed as if
their asthma had passed to the dog.
Number 8
Chihuahua only like other Chihuahuas
Even the AKC admits that Chihuahuas tend to not get along
with other dogs unless those dogs are Chihuahuas they seem willing to share
everything with their Chihuahua friends even their food and their humans.
On the other hand they tend to be aggressive with other
breeds however socialization plays a huge role.
Chihuahua’s introduced to other dogs as puppies and whose owners
refuse to tolerate aggressive behavior should do just fine with other breeds.
Number 9
Their health issues
Tiny dogs often come with significant health problems and
the Chihuahua is no exception the Chihuahua’s.
Round protruding eyes are one of its most distinctive
characteristics but they are prone to several genetic eye disorders and
frequent injuries Chihuahuas can be born with a liver defect known as portosystemic in which blood diverts away from the liver it may cause a
buildup of toxins in the dog's body stumped at growth and may be
fatal if not corrected with surgery
You must also be wary of paddler luxation hypoglycemia heart
murmurs and shivering
Number 10
Their grooming
Chihuahuas smooth coated shed but it's not too much so it's
manageable for all but the most house proud people brush them weekly with a
rubber grooming glove or soft bristle brush to remove dead hair and keep the
skin and coat healthy use a stainless steel comb to remove tangles from the
hair on the ears legs and tail.
Chihuahua’s big ears should be kept clean with a solution recommended
by the veterinarian and the rest is just primary care.
