The Great Dane
The Great Dane also commonly referred to as the Apollo of
dogs is a German breed of domestic dog known for its giant size.
Height and weight
Great Danes are powerful Giants who are regal intelligent
and elegant with a warm temperament these dogs are so iconic that in 1876
Germany declared the Great Dane its national dog with a maximum height of 30 to
32 inches.
When great Danes are born they only one or two pounds in
just half a year can weigh as much as 100 pounds these dogs can continue to
mature and grow until they're 2 or 3 years old .
These dogs are literally the tallest dogs in the world male’s
weigh 148.275 pounds whereas females weigh 110.240 pounds because of their size
Great Danes however have relatively short life span of only 6 to 8 years.
History
Great Dane is thought
to have been around for more than 400 years these gigantic canines were developed
by German nobility by proudly breeding Irish wolfhound for Heights Mastiffs for
muscle and greyhounds for speed given that they needed to be physically strong
and brave for hunting boars and protecting families.
Many people think that Great Danes are from Denmark but
Great Danes were originally bred in Germany a French naturalist George Louie
had once travelled to Denmark in 1700s and saw a version of the boar hound who
was slimmer and more like a greyhound in appearance he called the stars grand annoy

name in French the name stuck even though this breed has no Danish ancestry

Appearance
Great Danes are massive their head is narrow and flat on top
and rectangular with a square jaw and deep muzzle their eyes are medium-sized
deep-set and dark with a lively intelligent expression while the eyelids are
almond shaped and relatively tied with well-developed brows the ears drop
forward and a crop to stand erect
Whereas the nose is usually black excepting the blue deign
where it is a dark blue-black the Great Danes neck is firm haste well arched
long and muscular
They also have long powerful limbs and large rounded feet
the front legs are straight and when standing on their hind legs that are
taller than most people
Personality
Because of their size many people are afraid of Great Danes
however there are known as gentle giants for a reason these dogs are spirited
courageous never timid or aggressive always friendly and dependable and
moderately playful they're eager to please and they're highly people-oriented
demanding a great deal of attention from those around them including strangers
and children they tend to nudge people with their big old head.
When they want to be petted sometimes you'll meet one with
lapdog tendencies who drape themselves on you.
Socialization
The Great Dane can give the wrong impression about their
temperament and character in general these dogs are very friendly and affectionate
with their owners but they can't be reserved with strangers they are not
usually aggressive but it is important to socialize them when they are young
due to the tendency to be shy with new people properly socialized dogs are those
which get along with people dogs and other animals in this case there are particularly
good friends of children
Coat and Color
The coat of Great Dane is short thick and clean with a
smooth glossy appearance.
The six usual coat colors of Great Dane include
- Fawn
- Black
- Randell
- Blue
- Harlequin
- Mantle
Fawn code must be golden yellow in color and the mask must
be black.
The most common Great Danes coat color are fawn and black.
Coat must be glossy black brindle coat must be gold and
yellow with black markings across the body and a chevron pattern.
Blue coat must be pure steel blue Harlequin coat should
include white color with black torn patches over the entire body and mantle
coat must be black and white color with a solid black blanket extending over
the body
Grooming
Great Dane shed once or twice a year however hair loss will
be more profuse with a daily brushing daily brushing with a medium bristle brush
a rubber grooming mitt or tool or a hound glove will help keep shedding.
To a minimum Great Danes needed bath only occasionally
unless they get into something messy as with all breeds.
The Great Danes nail should be trimmed occasionally.
Danes teeth should be brushed at least twice or thrice a
week.
The bacteria that lurk inside a should be checked weekly for
redness or a bad order which can indicate an infection It should be clear with
no redness or discharged
Danes are known to be drooling dogs so get in the habit of
carrying a hand towel to wipe up slobber as you groom check for sores rashes or
signs of infection such as redness tenderness or inflammation on the skin in
the nose mouth and eyes.
Training and exercise
They need daily exercise Great Danes may seem sedate but
they require daily exercise appropriate to their age.
An adult Great Dane needs 30 to 60 minutes of daily exercise
depending on his age and activity level puppies and adolescents need about 90
minutes of exercise a day a brisk walk two or three times a day can be enough.
They can make good companions and jogs or hikes but you must
wait until the dog is two years old to avoid damage to growing joints genes
Great Danes tend to follow their nose wherever scent takes
them so they should always be kept on a leash and only be allowed in loose areas

They are easy to Train
Great Danes respond very well to firm consistent training

They are highly prone

Great Danes are general healthy but like all other breeds they're
prone to certain health problems

Danes are fed one large meal a day when they eat rapidly drink large volumes of
water after eating and exercise vigorously after hearing bloating also occurs
when the stomach is distended with gas or air and then twists many breeders and
owners consider

The world record holder for the tallest dog ever is a Great
Dane called Zeus with died in 2014 at the age of five.
